Day 15 – Sonora Pass (Hwy 108)

Travis is not doing well.

It’s the heat, the neverending sunshine that leads to blistering hot days climbing up and down these mountains.  I can’t remember the last time I even saw a cloud.  It’s slowly wearing me down and making me wonder why I’m out here when every day is miserable 😞

I still have 3-ish more days until Lake Tahoe, so I’ll use that time to decide what (if anything) I want to do about this.

Sonora Pass is generally considered the end of the Sierras, and even though it was unbearably hot, the Sierras are still gorgeous, so enjoy these last shots from them:

Thousand Island lake/peak.  Possibly one of the prettiest areas in the entire Sierras, and it’s right outside Mammoth, you could probably day-trip it
Toulumne meadows, the start of the PCT’s journey through Yosemite NP
Pretty waterfall in Yosemite
Lots of wildflowers along the trail
There was a 10-mile ridge right before Sonora Pass, giving incredible views, this picture doesn’t do it justice
Finally, another sample campsite.  This one was pretty spectacular!

  1. Wow, Travis, on the one hand, beautiful pictures, on the other, so sorry things aren’t going so well. Are you able to get weather forecasts often? Anyway, the group misses you and Chunky is looking mighty forlorn lately.

  2. Do you remember a lot of it from your previous time hiking the PCT? Looks stunning…..sorry about the heat. In Italy I absolute abhorred the heat. Made me very thankful for my nice cool mountain life

    1. Some of it is very familiar, I’ll be hiking and think “oh yeah, I remember this place”, but most of it has been long enough that it feels new again
